with my mind’s eye
watch the flow of people
the shuffle of feet
with the different sounds
of their telltale shoes
the divergent realities
through which truth stumbles frayed
to move in the world
rough as rope
knotted as every inarticulate promise

The differing line lengths in that second stanza work so darn’d well, Rob. Fantastic. Also, I find it interesting to read short pieces of yours because you seem to be disinclined towards them when left to your own druthers 😉

David
Thank you David. My poetry is the voice of my heart at that particular moment of the writing, so that is my primary driver. I can write to a prescribed form — but left to my own preference, they would generally be free verse. And for me, the length of free verse becomes whatever is dictated by what I feel needs be said in that moment of inspiration.
‘knotted as every inarticulate promise’ – I love this line. Wish I’d written it! Nice work Rob!
Thank you Ingrid!
the divergent realities

This seems to be the reality in which we live!
Great poem Rob.
Doesn’t it though Dwight…
The different rope metaphors you find work really well. Nice.
Thank you Xan.
This quadrille has great shape and use of sound, Rob.
Thank you Kim.
“Rough as rope”– yes. I would like to think it is sturdy.
Sturdy would be good.
Those promises are what always leave us in a knot in the end.
Under promise, over deliver…
Those telltale shoes seem a little clunkier these days. I’ve never felt so enlightened as I do now about how easily truth can become ignored and twisted. It’s sad. I really like this, Rob.
Truth is only as safe as the integrity of those handling it.
I love the comparisons between the two stanzas, but I particularly like the second stanza and “knotted as every inarticulate promise.”
Thsnk you Merril!
