”Poppies will put them to sleep” — Wicked Witch
air currents warm and soft
will fill my red red wings
lifting me excitedly aloft
carried off in free flight
I will feel the rush
as I’m swept up high
into the azure sky
lost in this thrill
spellbound — I fly
I will soar fast and free
above the trees and sea
undulating far below me
listening as I feel
the warm winds’ whisper
I will watch the world
roll silently to infinity
over the far horizon
floating upward rapidly
climbing further skyward
I will now be on my way
so I must close my eyes
then sail off far away
dreaming deep and still
‘midst these sweet poppies’ sway

Escapism in the highest … love your flight of fancy.
Thank you Helen… 🙂
Sounds absolutely wonderful. When the wind picked up this morning, it was tempting to find something with extra lift (a patio umbrella?). 🙂
Now that would be a trip Chrissa! 🙂
It would be a wet trip in my world today … but then again no doubt you’d soar above it! Uplifting words, Rob…literally uplifting!
Thank you Bev!
“in the sweet poppies’ sway” – subtle that! Always has been a question about Oz. Ruby red wings instead of slippers?
Oz was a celebration of opium — no doubt
you have the will to fly with each verse and I especially like
“I will watch the world
silently bend away”
It felt right Laura, that line — it was exciting when it came through… my muse was kind!
This is glorious and absolutely lovely Rob! I love where the image took you!
Thank you Carrie! 🙂
An uplifting read!
A little poppy magic.
Nice lilting piece Rob – great last verse finish too… A pleasure to read… Thanks
Thank you Scott!
So much lovely alliteration going on in your poem.
Happy Sunday, thanks for dropping by my blog today
Much love…
Thank you Gillena… 🙂
“Flying”! I was just considering buy MMT on itunes last night, and think I will. Of course I used to have it–on cassette! I need to get it again.
ps–many years ago, when I lived in San Antonio, I was walking down the street one night and still remember hearing “The Hissing of Summer Lawns” drifting from someone’s window. It was a nice moment.
That along with “Blue” and “Hejira” are my 3 favorite Joni albums.
I have always like the lose cook of “Flying” that little descending riff that George uses to enter the mix is wonderful. “Fool On The Hill” is a killer tune. MMT is an excellent album. I played the original 1967 US vinyl release constantly when It came out. Still binge listen to my Beatle from time to time — love their magic. They also vividly remind me of my rock bands in the 60’s. We did half originals, half covers — covered lots of Beatles, mixed in with the best SanFran and LA stuff… and other ‘heady’ stuff.
Oh this SOARS, Rob. Thanks for an outstanding write and for some of my fave air-tunes. I’m running a bit late on reading/commenting these days. Sorry. Cool write to an intriguing prompt.
Thank you Ron. It’s getting harder and harder for me to keep up as well Ron. My declining eyesight and the growing arthritis in my fingers makes commenting more and more of a task — but all we can do is try. I enjoy seeing your visits my friend. Stop by when you can, I’m not keeping score.
I love the idea of doing this “in the sweet poppies’ sway.”
Glad this worked for you Lisa. 🙂
We do all wish we could fly high and away. I wouldn’t necessarily need to be smelling flowers along the way.
..
Up up and away Jim! 🙂
How good it is to unwind in the countryside away from mundane work and home and feel as though we are part of nature too.
It’s spectacular Robin.
Oh wonderful I would love to be swept away and carried in free flight.
Love the last line “dreaming deeply in the sweet poppies’ sway” eventhough I had to disacciociate for a moment as poppies in NZ are linked to the battlefields.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful to fly free! Here in the states wearing the poppy is associated with remembering military veterans as well. They are also associated with opium as the poppy is the source of opium, morphine, codine, and heroin. This little flower is both lovely and powerful. The sleep referred to in the poppy field scene in the Wizard Of Oz touches on the “opium dream” aspect of the poppy.
That’s just gorgeous!
Thank you so very much Rosemary…
I liked the meandering in here.
It is intentionally lose tied in some places with crisp clear clever sequences of whit.
I so love the images and motion in this flight poem It makes me wish I could fly that paper airplane. Beautiful!
I am glad this engaged you Susie. I tried to make it buoyant.
