T he lover’s join for Hades’ night
at the dying of season’s light
as this spent year wanes
Ceres searches in vane
will life’s cycles reprise
a fertile new year again arise
will the power of the light’s rebirth
bring Persephone’s bounty again to earth
…STAY TUNED…

This feels very mysterious, Rob. Even in brevity, you pack so much emotion in this, it’s startling and beautiful. Love the rhyme scheme, along with the hope at the end for Persephone to come back eventually. One could only imagine what the state of nature looked like without her, especially as plant life died in the season; Ceres was devastated.
Luckily, it’s only a myth but all the same, it has tragic overtones and grief in different ways–grief for the kidnapped child, and grief for losing your freedom. Beautifully penned and I will be sure to stay tuned! 😀
Thank you Lucy. I don’t follow any myths with any focus — but after reading a bit of the Persephone thing, I was imagining it being a limited series Netflix production.
Oh, BTW, in my production, Persephone was young, but not a child. She was very late teens, maybe 20 — definitely past the age of consent. And she was not kidnapped, but actually fled from Ceres, who was an oppressive mother, and went to be with Hades, whom Persephone secretly loved. At least, that is the basis for my screenplay. 🙂
Woah, Rob – it does feel a bit like that, doesn’t it? We are entering uncharted Anthropocene territory.
Guess we will all definitely have to stay tuned Ingrid! 🙂
Stay tuned indeed! Suddenly it’s a soap opera. Great stuff.
Thank you Sarah just having a bit if fun, no disrespect intended for the myth.
I suppose we “stay tuned” every year! Some years it seems like there is a long wait for the series to continue! ????
Ain’t that the truth Merril… 😉
This is probably obvious, Rob, but even the shape of your poem contains meaning… I think you did a fantastic job with this prompt.
Yours,
David
Thank you David! As I replied to Dwight, the hourglass shape was on purpose… 🙂
Oh, Old Smoothie, you speak with forked tongue, but your disrespect was mild and beautifully encouched!
Sorry Bev… 😉 … just that the Persephone myth, no matter what version or modified version one espouses, they all read like TV dramedies — I couldn’t resist.
I love the hour glass symbolism of your poem shape Rob. A great poem. Well done!
Thank you Dwight! Glad you saw my hourglass as a symbol of waiting… 🙂 … worked a bit to get that to work out.
OK–brevity & levity, nice mix and twist. There are some versions of the myth where Persephone went willingly. But your take is both outrageous And fun. I was at the other end of the spectrum from you this time.
Thanks Glenn. I play in the dark and heavy pool quite a bit. I just went for some shallow water here brother.
This is absolutely brilliant! Love your perspective on it, Rob 🙂
Thank you Sanaa.
HAH! Stay tuned indeed! I’m reminded of climate change, all the things humanity has done to earth to slowly diminish its fertility and lifespan…stay tuned indeed!
Hope we are able to “stay” Bev, but it will certainly require some fine tuning on the part of humanity.
