Walk With Me

”The clearest way into the universe is through a forest wilderness”John Muir

Very deep
in this primeval wood
secreted among the old-growth
nestles a serene forest clearing

soft filtered sunlight
falls in rays
so gently
through the green canopy

enwraps golden
this hallowed place

let us go

walk with me my love
‘round the lake
but let us be quiet

let us listen
to the voices of nature

to our footfalls
as they drum the root chambers

each step cushioned gently
by centuries of needle-drop
in this wilderness forest

we will enjoy the rise and fall
twist and turn of the trail

serenaded by the spring breeze
high in the treetop canopy

the steady rhythm of our footsteps
will sooth our weary hearts

we’ll trek deep into the forest

to a crest of a knoll
overlooking a downed redwood log

a very special log
at quiet repose
in this magical place

we will be sanctified
by nature’s grace
in this sacred space

here we will rest peacefully
in this towering
ancient woodland cathedral

we’ll bask in the filtered sunlight
that drifts down dreamlike
golden
into this enchanted clearing

we will give thanks
as we breath deeply
the intoxicating natural bouquet
of this timeless forest

a rich heady blend

conifers
ferns
mosses
musks
and sweet ionized mountain air

so come love
and bring no book

for this day
we will embrace calm
gratitude
and nature’s splendor

  1. You live in a truly beautiful place, Rob, and I would be delighted to walk around the lake with you! Great use of sound in the ‘footfalls as they drum the root chambers’ and the serenading autumn breeze’, and smell in ‘the intoxicating natural bouquet of this timeless forest’.

  2. Your poem is a beautiful invitation and your setting is magical.

Serenaded by the autumn breeze – yes I can here the melody, see the landscape and feel the beat of nature.

Often when I am in need of respite I drive north into the mountains. Hiking the trails. Standing with the tall pines at the peak. There is a deep sense of peace.

Thank you for sharing your earthshoes…

  3. What a beautiful walk you have shared with us. I especially like the detail about
    “each step cushioned gently
    by centuries of needle-drop
    in this ancient forest.”
This poem had a peacefulness about it, which I appreciated greatly.

I love this so much–the needle floor of ancient pine forests. This ode to your place of grace, this invitation, is quite beautiful. Its images are crystal clear, and the photos enhance it too. I’m immersed in the Michael Jackson now. Smie.

    1. Yes it is Sumana. To be absolutely quiet and hear only nature — no noise pollution whatsoever. And at night a pure black sky, not one bit of light pollution, with billions and billions of stars piercing the pitch black. It is breathtaking and uplifting.

  5. Rob, I so love your poem – and your photos. You live in the midst of nature’s beauty, so fortunate to still have old growth to walk in, as am I. The video Forest Song is beautiful! What a gift of a post! Many thanks.

    1. Thank you so much Sherry… 🙂 It was a fun prompt to which to create a “walking” poem — and to illustrate it with several new DDE™ surrealistic art pieces.

  6. Your descriptions are dreamlike and well fit for this amazing world. I am blessed to have that world on my doorstep. The gorgeous picture at the top looks exactly like the bush on our West Coast with its ferns and mosses. Your poem makes me want to go back there

  7. Stunning rob. You pick out all the details that make such a place real for me. There’s so little old growth on the east coast… I miss it so

  8. I don’t have an old growth forest or woods to walk through but there’s this shallow creek lined with old apple trees, a stray aspen, maples, and undergrowth to meander through. Will have to do…

    1. Sara, thank you so much. I am pleased you found this piecd soothing. I am also please you like my digital art, which you graciously call photos. The subjects of the digital works do not exist in the “real” world. It’s strictly virtual surreal imaging, done with imaging programs, extrapolation bots, and final image editing manipulation. I call my particular process DDE™(Directed Digital Extrapolation™). I explain it a little more on my site if you search down the left sidebar.

  9. Really wonderful…enticing, bursting with sincerity…absolutely loved it….and enjoyed Van Morrison’s Redwood, too

    1. Thank you Ain. I am genuinely pleased you enjoyed this piece my friend. It flows ftom my love of wilderness, and my many, many years exploring our wild world. As always, be safe… 🙂

    1. Thank you Ken. I find it my soul’s breath, and my heart’s pulse, and my mind’s escape. I am definitely withering as my health denies me that sanctuary. 😐

  10. I love how personal you made this magical ode to nature. The poem is so vibrant and soothing at the same time.

  11. Rob, I remember this place from an earlier iteration. I feel like I went there with you. It feels like a meditation. Would you consider reading this live on Saturday?? Would love to have it recorded so I could listen to it as a meditation.

    1. I will be taking Kathy to the airport Saturday morning a 7:00 AM. Her father passed away so she is going back to be with her family. I will make a recording and post it on my site. I will try to have it up for OLN… 🙂

  12. This is a gorgeous walk through the wilderness…I particularly loved this stanza
    each step cushioned gently
    by centuries of needle-drop
    in this wilderness forest

Centuries of needle drop what a beautiful cushion. A beautiful dreamwalk.
