Beautiful eyes
dangerous and deep as nile nocturne
scorching as nubian sundance
this blackthorn rose
is the secreted passion
craving’s dominance
bewitched of eros
the sultry goddess
inscribed in the book of ardor
fired in molten desire
a woman forged of earthen bronze
an ebony sorceress
vernal seductress
emerged from a golden dawn
ablaze in the sensual dreams
of writhing midnight
smoldering ember
in the golden echo
of a soul-torched love call
sustained to surrender’s sweet moan
she is smoke and flame
lust’s mysterious traveler

She represents the type of woman that I attracted so many times in life Merril. Don’t know why but it’s true.
Weather Report is a perfect fit for this, Rob.
Thank you Ken. I have been a huge Weather Report fan, since their self-titled first album “Weather Report”, was released in 1971. That album was a classic of early fusion. It was awarded Album of the Year by Down Beat magazine that year. In 1972 Weather Report released its second album, I Sing the Body Electric, and from that point on, I was totally hooked. I think their “Mysterious Traveler” album in ‘74 was their most fascinating work. That album inspired my “Blackthorn Rose” poem here. When Jaco Pastries (RIP) joined the group on “Black Market” in 1976, they had what was, in my opinion, their strongest line up of musicians — and begat IMHO, their best album… 1977’s “Heavy Weather”. That was the album in which Jaco’s masterful influence began impacting their work. I loved Jaco’s work since discovering him with WR. His beginning to sit in with Joni Mitchel’s band, in ‘79 on her live “Shadows & Light” album, I think marked Joni’s most interesting string of Albums. Sadly, the music world lost a bright star in ‘87 when Jaco was beaten to death outside a Florida night club.
Well done, Rob. The seductress is the one that seems to draw the attention. Never knowing always wondering what is next!
