”The Dovecote” by: Lee Madgwick
Although the sky hangs heavy
in a threatening deep slate grey
the small tan stone dove cote
with its charming six-windowed cupola
radiates a settled sense of centered calm
further enhanced by the glow
of the golden afternoon sun
bathing it in a gathered beam
breaking precipitously
through the cloud cover
like a soft directed spotlight
wind whistling ‘neath wings
white birds of peace
glide in graceful circles
just above the steep-pitched
four-pointed shingled roof
perched on the stately tall
invitingly open arched walls
a single dove coos serenely
resting in one of the small portals
that sit centered in each wall
above the generous archways
that open onto the rich green grass
of a gently rolling tree lined knoll
the overall visual impression
is one of simple enduring beauty
the feeling evoked is captivating
a bles’sed sense of the sacred
shadowed inside someone kneels
concealed in a lover’s prayer

Ha – We selected the same artwork. You have captured the beauty of another place. I hear the gentle cooing of a heart full of hope and love. Although the sky hangs heavy, there is still light beaming.
That particular image was compelling. I am certain you felt it as well. It was a joy for me to put words to this wonderful art piece.
A great descriptive poem, Rob. I like the feeling of this being a sacred space of some sort!
Thank you Dwight. That was the feeling it evoked in me…
Beautiful, Rob. It reads like a detailed scene from a script.
Thank you Punam…
Seeing this, I realise how good you are at observation and description. That feeling of peace is so well caught. I’m glad you liked the prompt.
Thank you Sarah. I have always cherished the visual splendor of life…

Fantastic poem and loved hearing the song again
Thsnk you again AJ…
Yes, I really miss LC! He had writtdn some wonderful songs during his life, and many fine artists recorded them — including this one. However, for me, his personal delivery of this gem really lifts the curtain so we can sed behind the full meaning of the lyrics — the profane and the profound.
Use of every detail tied neatly together in a lofty message! I concur. This image pays homage to all that is sacred. Artful piece.
Thank you Susan…
Yes, I couldn’t ignore the sacred essence of the piece.
As beautifully crafted, Rob, and as precise as the architecture you admire!
Thank you Kathy…
Very moving, Rob. Lovely.

If only such a peaceful place would exist… the world needs it.
Yes we do my friend…
What a soothing response to the prompt Rob. I love the many ways we can come to something different with these visual inspirations.
I strongly embraced the ekphrastic approach in this piece Sean. It struck me as such a rich visual that leant itself ideally to the form.
…a gathered beam of light
We need sanctuaries like this! Beautiful
Thank you Magaret, and I agree…
Rob, I love how you turned this into sacred space. You make a believer out of me with your poem.
Believe what the heart reveals Lisa.
