Patience

From my spring vantage
at cliff’s edge
overlooking the mighty pacific
I behold a natural marvel

the annual northern migration
of a large pod
of majestic grey whales

adults and recent born

as they pass
the rugged cliff regions
of the breathtaking
upper oregon coast

they are on their way
north to alaska
where they will summer
raising their young

in the autumn
these beautiful behemoths
will pass here once more
on their way south
to their spawning lagoons
of baja california/mexico

these are sacred processions
as these giants
make their graceful way
slow and steady
as their inner clock
dictates these seasonal pilgrimages
as it has over 10 million years

from my lofty perch
I catch sight
of another ocean titan
as roaring in
the chest of a huge wave
slams a massive boulder

the great stone rocks back
undetectably

with a deep thud
more felt than heard
it bumps solid
against the base of the cliff
to which it crowds

and upon which I stand
in deep reverence
the awestruck sentinel

as the spent wave recedes
the hulking mass below
settles once again

immovable as bedrock

defying the next swell
and the next
and the next

but the sea
like that pod of greys
is steady and patient

this steadfast giant
in the ebb and flow of time
will acquiesce
becoming the grains of sand
upon which it now rests

here it will bear witness
for hundreds of thousands of years
as mighty grey whales
continue their amazing migrations
sustaining their cycle of life

Meadow Dance

Original DDE™ surrealistic quintych art: “Meadow Dance” by: rob kistner © 5/20/24

As is the spark of birth, as is the burst of a seed, as is the first ray of dawn, as is the tug of love awakening, as is the moment of humility, as is the pen to blank page — so is the essence of becoming.

As is the marriage vow, as is the shifting wind, as is the chrysalis, as is the moment of death, as is the boil or freeze of water, as is pursuit of a new direction, as is the solstice — so is the essence of change.

As is the month of May — so is unwritten possibility, so is renewal, so is a great lifting of the spirit. As is the opening of the blossoming daisy, so is the gentle opening of the heart, warming to love

wings flutter gently
spring breeze bends flowering stems
meadow dance begins

Danny & Dot

~ Darkly whimsical absurdity ~

Original DDE™ surrealistic art: “Danny & Dot” by: rob kistner © 5/16/24

Here’s a love story to blow yer mind
about danny and his big ole belly
who loved dotty and her grand behind
now neither one looked like a model
but their passion was well defined
they loved to go dancin’ dressed up tight
yes it’s amazing what spandex can bind
they’d shake it like balloons full of jelly
they’d feel the feels — the big love kind

they’d dance n’dance like crazy
they’d bounce jiggle and roll
neither one of them was lazy
they’d go and go and go and go
‘til morne was dew-drippin’ hazy
‘til the world was a golden glow
‘til they both were feelin’ spacey
‘til they stirred their hun’gry souls
then make lotta’love — a wee bit racy

Looking for America

”The American Dream” — Salvadore Dali

This american life
is flawed

the american dream
though well intentioned
was built initially on fraud

america was stolen
native residents uprooted
persecuted

victim to a legacy of conquest
and imperialistic acquisition
fitted with contrived tradition

one cannot call it
a perfect union
though it has envisioned itself one
with liberty and justice for all

really

that dream’s a short fall
history has been its downfall

the first peoples of this land
this incredible land
we call — america

this land

so beautiful
from sea to shining sea
meant for you and me

that may not be
how some see it to be

these first people
who lived for 13,000 years
in balance with this land

these peoples may not agree
that what was brought to their realm
was justice and liberty

we have a long way to reach
for justice
for these first people

or those
whose heritage was kidnapped
smuggled from their homelands
on brutal ships at sea
abducted
to the land of the free

shackled
indentured

they may not agree

and for the displaced
who leave all they know behind
in the hope to find
this america the beautiful

who smack headlong
into the ugliness of bigotry

neither might they agree

and we have to really get to work
on the liberty thing
the practiced actuality
leaves a bit of a sting

I don’t belive it means
the right to take what you want
to use how you see convenient
to live the life you desire

regardless

with no thought for the impact
on the land
or the peoples who now share
this land

people

all of whom
have the same inalienable rights
to life
to liberty
to the pursuit of happiness

— at least as we so profess
and have inscribed indelibly
as our litmus of civility

but do we believe this
is there the understanding
and love enough in our hearts
to uphold this

perhaps not I fear
somewhere along the way
we have become lost

instead of seeing our america
as a land of opportunity for all

for those here first
and those of us
who have come
and are still coming

opportunity for all
is not how we live it

we seem to have made
an unfortunate pivot

to now see opportunity
as a rumble strip
over which we thunder
to ravage and plunder

shifting from a legacy of conquest
and imperialism
to an equaly toxic
legacy of speed
and greed

lacking to heed
the destruction to this land
and all its people

we have never fully learned
the grace
the beauty
of balance

it seems
not in our parlance

in our misguided arrogance
we squandered our chance
to learn environmental balance
from the first peoples of this land

this precious and fragile land
we now call — america

people we labeled only
as savage
as ignorant

because we were too arrogant
to look deeper

to see their reverence
for the land
for its animals
to see they were the keeper

to understand the necessity
of this reverence

in our ambivalence
we rushed to acquire and consume
and systematically destroy
this amazingly diverse land

under our self-proclaimed banner
of progress
of civilization
we cared not to understand

the irony of the social
and environmental chaos
in which we find ourselves
I hope is not lost upon us

given this america
built on the backs
of the oppressed
of the slave

still is supposed to be
a realm of the just
land of the free
home of the brave

the place for opportunity
prosperity
equality for all

love
justice
equality
freedom
opportunity
responsibility
understanding
these words it seems
have lost their meaning

under these spacious blue skies
‘midst these amber waves of grain
in these majestic mountain’s purples
in the lush green of our ancient forests

in our nation’s widening divide
their meanings have slowly died
each becoming a ghost in the burbs

fading

like this dream
that is america

Wake Up!

become the ripple
that becomes the wave
that becomes the tsunami
that floods the world with love
to see a new sun of understanding rise

before we all drown in greed, hatred, and lies

Love Blindness

Original DDE™ surrealistic art: “Dejection” by: rob kistner © 5/14/24

Left standing — a dejected fool
in the disapproving sun
to wither from sadness

as my crumpled heart
foolishly faithful
curls brittles and breaks

a victim of my trust
I did not see
the warnings to flee

and so I’m left empty
hollowed by ignorance
and self-inflicted denial

didn’t heed the dark clouds above
was blind to the meaning thereof
didn’t see you fall out of love

Emptied Rooms

”Rage rage, against the dying of the light…”Dylan Thomas

Original DDE™ surrealistic art: “Emptied Rooms” by: rob kistner © 5/13/24

Here is the change

the forgetting
the slipping away
the frustration

the less and less being able
and yet
the burning longing to
remember

memories
dimming in a fog

cherished times and places
loved ones faces
fading
into twilight

like so many emptied rooms

Night Sky

Original DDE™ surrealistic art: “Oregon Night Sky” by: rob kistner © 5/8/24

You arrived in spring
asking why I was alone

I had no good response
but that shoe had fallen
with a deafening thud
so what was I to say

you seemed startled by life
and asked me about sorrow

I had no good response
so I invited you in
and watched as you untangled truth
marveling at your balance

for years now
together we’ve watched the night sky
and wondered about love

Walk With Me

”The clearest way into the universe is through a forest wilderness”John Muir

Original DDE™ surrealistic art: “Walk With Me” by: rob kistner © 11/8/23

Very deep
in this primeval wood
secreted among the old-growth
nestles a serene forest clearing

soft filtered sunlight
falls in rays
so gently
through the green canopy

enwraps golden
this hallowed place

let us go

walk with me my love
‘round the lake
but let us be quiet

let us listen
to the voices of nature

to our footfalls
as they drum the root chambers

each step cushioned gently
by centuries of needle-drop
in this wilderness forest

we will enjoy the rise and fall
twist and turn of the trail

serenaded by the spring breeze
high in the treetop canopy

the steady rhythm of our footsteps
will sooth our weary hearts

we’ll trek deep into the forest

to a crest of a knoll
overlooking a downed redwood log

a very special log
at quiet repose
in this magical place

we will be sanctified
by nature’s grace
in this sacred space

Original DDE™ surrealistic art: “Sacred Space”
by: rob kistner © 5/7/24

here we will rest peacefully
in this towering
ancient woodland cathedral

we’ll bask in the filtered sunlight
that drifts down dreamlike
golden
into this enchanted clearing

we will give thanks
as we breath deeply
the intoxicating natural bouquet
of this timeless forest

a rich heady blend

conifers
ferns
mosses
musks
and sweet ionized mountain air

so come love
and bring no book

for this day
we will embrace calm
gratitude
and nature’s splendor

Urge to Fly

Original DDE™ surrealistic art: “Beauty On the Wing” — by: rob kistner © 5/6/24

Peace and quiet is not always easy out here on my back deck in the months of early Spring. As Seattle lies nestled in a flyover zone for Canadian Geese, it can be rather noisy in the evening when I’m out trying to enjoy the relaxation of sunset. These beautiful creatures are flying V-formation north into Canada. It’s breeding time. The propagation urge stirs in their blood. The honking is on the wing — look out below!

Fascinating how nature has instilled such instinctual “body clocks” in so many of its wondrous beasts — fur, fin, and feather. Just as the powerful bear knows when to hibernate, and the agile salmon knows when, and even where to spawn – the gorgeous geese of Canada know when it’s their time. Something told the wild geese it was time to fly. That something was their amazing natural cyclical imprinting

Jazz Apparitions

Original DDE™ surrealistic art: “Jazz Apparitions” — by: rob kistner © 5/2/24

Oh spirits
of toned wood and bamboo bent reed
of taut tuned steel and sizzlin’ skins
come to me now — jazz must be saved
jazz must be served — we’ll riff contrapuntal
play for me in healing virtuosity

I found a box and jammed it with jazz

whisper to me in purest resonance
unleash the chordal’d structure
espouse the harmonics of truth
tell all about the wirebirds
we must take violaville by storm
strummin’ wild in the tenth world
taunt me in a 3/4 minor chord flurry
of rich sizzling scalded jazz

I found a box and jammed it with jazz

here I come — I am an inferno
ensemble desire rages strong
as we rise skyward in musicality
ride’n the bliss of improv in scat
soaring in untethered sacred syncopation
well damn — we’re totally musicalirious

I found a box and jammed it with jazz

Offbeat

Original DDE™ surrealistic art: “Cat-tastrophy” — by: rob kistner © 5/1/24

Selfies find me quite perturbed
one might say I look disturbed
it’s just that I’m fed up to here
with all the lies, truth is blurred

patience has been left behind me
might just loose my mind completely
madness seems to grip this world
that’s lost interest in reality

so who’s to say that I can’t fly
and whose right is it to question why
I wear my trousers inside out
it keeps the pockets dry

I see you smirking at my hat
it’s aluminum foil — imagine that
it helps with my cell phone reception
and fascinates my cats

yes I do lose track of time
hours, days — is that a crime
you know it’s all just one’s perspective
and I am very fond of mine

and I’ve a language of my own
like no other you’ve ever known
I speak it only to myself
and only when I’m all-alone

now if you see me on the street
notice the bells upon my feet
the ringing’s meant to scare you
not meant to be discreet
am I strange — perhaps that true
but I’m not nuts — I’m just offbeat

yet — sanity is so damned hard to find
this world has lost its fucking mind

Moonlit Breeze

Original DDE™ surrealistic art: “Night Breeze” — by: rob kistner © 4/30/24

Briskly clean
silky cool
it spills into
spring’s night window

slips satin silver
sly and sensuous
sheer and silent
as the moon

wafts and tumbles
tantalizes
floats and swoops
in sweet refresh

dances gently
up your arms
across your breasts
to brush your cheek

wraps itself
soft upon you
upon my self too
in fond embrace

whispered rushes
fluttered breaths
like loving strokes
caress our skin

lilting tender
breath of comfort
zephyred fingers
toss our hair

this moonlit breeze
delivers true
soothing you
and too — my self

do not weave
your fabric of myth
or speak to us in grand riddle

telling of the mysteries

or glorious
times past

help us see

set ablaze our pure hearts
with true fire
of honesty

Aprilove

~ Celebrating Innocence ~

Original DDE™ surrealistic art: “Intoxicating April” — by: rob kistner © 4/25/24

Potent spring can make one
act quite the lovesick fool
heady with anticipation
desires sparkle like a jewel

april’s wine is intoxicating
as winter’s pale heart yearns
to feel spring’s grand unfolding
as nature’s palette slowly turns

this sweet inebriation
of april’s longing soul
can bring forth act’s impulsive
and draw one to the jester’s role

so be wary – for when one’s
caught in this season’s swoon
the better judgements of january
dissolve under april’s moon

the elixir of a world in bloom
is to the lusting lovelorn
a most dangerous of potions
risky randy thoughts are born

so remember and be warned
under passion’s frenzied rule
april can send one’s heart
awhirl like a lovestruck fool

Trippin’ Kittens

This poem and art inspired by this Louis Wain image —>>

Original DDE™ surrealistic art: “Trippin’ Kittens” by: rob kistner © 4/23/24

I’m a smitten kitten
all toked and trippin’
stayin’ stone cool
as reality’s slippin’

this cheshire kitten
is my good friend
and yes we’ve both
gone round the bend

my name is flower
this fella’s named ziggy
we’re locked down tight
and gettin’ jiggy

we just got back
from wonderland
a spontaneous trip
really quite unplanned

our strutten’s righteous
we purrrrr like silk
we’re high as midnight
and cravin’ milk

we’re lush and lazy
ain’t nobody’s fools
we’re bad-ass felines
precious as jewels

we’re tie-dye n’leather
n’high as a kite
if ya bum us out
it’ll be dude — goodnight!

so sit back — shut up
don’t be rude
don’t ‘cha be harshin’
our mellow mood

‘cause we’re chill’n smooth
as Federico Fellini…
…his name is ziggy
they call me queenie
