Evening Prayer

~

sun sits low on the horizon
dusk slowly advances
the breath of night begins to stir
all the daydreams are gone to bed

I sit quiet
on my ole bench
soothed by the cool breeze
warmed by the memories
that huddle ’round me

from far into the past
they drift
forward through the years

they visit gently
one by one

memories of those
I’ve been well to know
those I’ve been blessed to love
those that have got beyond
a tender tear for every one

a sweetness fills the air
just a touch of soft regret

my heart is full
my spirit calm
I surrender
to fate’s embrace

would this evening never end
but soon
the lingering day
will bow its head
twilight too will fade

as the waxing night
blankets my repose
I fall still
and pray

pray
when soon carried away
it be in deep
peaceful sleep

Yet

  • inspired by the first day I met my wife in 1987…

    Yet

    ~

had she not appeared in that clearing
    so lost

had she not crossed my threshold
    on that september day

    had not her voice
drifted like silk on a summer breeze
    to wrap sheer and sweet
    around my heart

    had not I been drawn
like a bloom to the morning sun

    had not I been captivated
    as a hummingbird
    by a drop of nectar
    crystal on a velvet petal

had not my love come down
soft as a rolling mountain meadow

had not this dream been born

had not my life begun again

    This Broken heart

    ~
    this heart’s now yours
    this damaged heart
    this brittle fractured aching heart
    broken by you, every part

I’ve no use for this ruined heart
    plucked here from my chest
I seek a new and vital heart
    one that’s far less stressed

    a fresh heart that’s unbreakable
    a heart able to forgive
    unmarred unscarred yet tender
beating with the joy to live

    Our True Work

Something life’s experiences have taught me: seeing the world for what it is makes you smart, envisioning the world for what it can be – makes you wise…

    Our True Work

    •

    there are countless contradictions
in the elements of the work we do
    and conflictions as we strive
but bring these not to table

    for I am you
    and you are me
    and we are all together
    in this constant labor
    for our daily bread

and this toil to sustain the body
this does not feed the spirit
this is not our true work

    to lift someone in need
    to measure well in tolerance
to seek the components of peace
    to create enduring possibility

    this is the true work
    in the final sweep
    ‘round the face of time

this is what the soul eats

    Gone

…to loved ones missed, now sadly departed…

    Gone

    •

    after the clutter of leaving
    after the hurry of goodbye
    after sweet anticipation faded away

    after no more embraces
    after the laughter was memory
after the sadness collected day upon day

    after the spaces fell empty
    after the familiar grew distant
after our time together had become the past

    after the taste of regret
    after the loneliness mounted
after sands in the glass spilled away much too fast

I did not think it would be this quiet
I did not think it would seem so far
no I did not know it could be so quiet
nor did I know how this silence would scar

    Bliss

    Bliss

    •

    let us dare
    sweet lust’s advance
    to intertwine
    in love’s enhance

    I burn to offer
    love’s special kiss
    to fire your soul
    in passion’s bliss

    to enfold you deep
    in nocturne’s hour
    to taste the nectar
    of your tender flower

    you are the dream
    that I adore
    my one desire
    to love you more

    The Dimming

    The Dimming

    •

    here is the change

    the forgetting

    the slipping away
    into the haze of memory

    the frustration
    of no longer being able
    and still
    the burning longing to…
    remember

    and you
    dimming in this fog
midst the times we have cherished
    the places we have loved
    fading beyond reach

    an ever-mounting loneliness
    like so many vacant seats

    empty

    Together True

    Together True

    •

    you came to me
    deep in my summer
    on the wings of spring

    filled with hope and wonder
    fresh and sweet
    as nature’s nectar

you brought my heart to quicken
    breathed new life
    to fill my soul

    awakening forgotten passion
    the stir of dreams
    the fire of joy

    we’ve lived life in celebration
    touched mystery
    embraced the awe

    never ran away from trouble
    the good and bad
    we faced head on

we’ve traveled now into our winter
    a place of challenge
    a time of change

though the chill is at the door
    still we’re blessed
    with nurtured warmth

no matter what life’s weather threatens
    we’re ever wrapped
    in love’s embrace

side by side as was our promise
    together true
    to journey’s end

    Silent

    Silent

    ~

do you hear the autumn wind
    stirring in the branches

do you hear the leaves rustle

    do you hear my breath
    whispering your name

do you hear my heart beat

do you hear my tears fall

    or is it silent

    silent as the light-less realm
    that hauntingly engulfs my soul

    silent as that night
    when apples spilled
    on the broken stair
    where rail eluded
    your grasping hand

    silent as your futile cry
    when no voice came
    to grace your lips

    tender lips
    that parted gently
    to hold my kiss

    lips

    that will not know again
    sweet fruit

    nor love

    Two Moments

These are two poems about two powerful and indelible life-moments I shared with my son Justin.

The first “Night Sky” is about the courageous moment he chose, at age fourteen, to leave his mother’s home to move across our country, to live with me in Oregon — through the years of his high school and college graduations, and his early career. This was an incredible gift he gave me.

The second, “Book of Days”, is about the moment, two days ago, when he and his wife Christine, moved from Oregon to pursue a career advancement — a deeply bittersweet moment for me.

    Night Sky

    •

    you arrived in spring
    asking why I’d left

    I had no good response
but the other shoe had fallen
    with a deafening thud
so what was I to do

    you looked startled by life
    and asked me about sorrow

    I had no good response
    so I took you in
and watched as you untangled truth
    marveling at your balance

    for 19 years
together we watched the night sky
    and wondered about love

    Book of Days

    •

    in the book of days
    clearly it is written
    your time for moving on
    beyond the reach of yesterday

    in this book of days
    so too is it written
    clearly mine grow short
    my grasp loosens on tomorrow

    our miles apart grow greater
    our time together lessens
    as you pursue the future
I slip further in the past

and per the book of days
this is the way of nature
    the son becomes the father
    the father bows away

    yet stands this father’s dream
    would that this space between
    but vanish with this pain
    of bittersweet farewell

    that the book somehow rewritten
would bend both time and space
    and my days once more
    stretch full to your horizon

    Ballo diVita

    Ballo diVita

    •

    he
a master of time and space
    she
    so young and trusting

    he
a wizard of colors and words
dazzled her with danger and dreams
    she
    a nubile daughter of nature
    anointed him with exotic pleasures

    he
replaced the sun in her sky
with a fire he conjured and kept
    she
    warmed herself in its heat
came to his bed at its setting

    they
the left foot and the right foot poised
to step forth in creativity’s dance
to whirl and glide persistent and true
in the measure and balance of love

Images – a ten year vigil

    …lest we ever forget

    Images

    •

    images

    unreal
    unfathomable images

    the graceful glide
    engulfed by the spire
in a roar of golden orange

    horribly beautiful

    perversely mesmerizing

    obscene
    devastating images

    torrents of humanity
    raining down

    desperation their only escape

    masses of humanity
    racing
    to outrun the unbelievable

    praying
to be delivered from the inconceivable

    traumatic images

    shrines of free commerce
    consumed
    by the unbearable weight
    of their fragile significance
    plummeting to earth
    in a cloud of self-destruction

    heartbreaking images

    screaming
    dazed
    terrified souls
    consumed
by the unbearable weight of the moment

    staggering onward
    to outdistance the surging roll
    of all-engulfing
    pulverized aftermath

    courageous images

    battered
    determined
    tireless heroes

    those who were called
    who served unselfishly

    some
    who gave the ultimate service

    haunting images

    color
    gender
    ethnicity
    wiped away
    from the ashen-grey faces
    of the traumatized throngs

    now just masks of calamity

    all made equal
    by horror and grief

    one nation
    under siege
    inconsolable
    with tragedy and sorrow
    for all

    unforgettable images
    burned into our hearts

    Clown

    Clown

    •

I’m the sad little clown with the frowning face
the round red nose and the great big tear
this meek facade and silly sham
belie the horror that I engineer

life’s dealt me cold my hand is slack
not one queen no king nor ace
so violence now dwells in me
    masked behind my woeful face

no one suspects the evil soul
that festers deep in this funny fool
they know not the monster here
my gentle sheen conceals the cruel

they don’t realize a broken heart
a ruined life makes one quite mad
    they simply see the pitiful
the painted face that looks so sad

the shaggy coat the baggy pants
the red suspenders the big white glove
they do not know it hides the hand
that choked the life from the one they love

town after town state after state
bodies mount in the circus’ wake
in the dead of night at the dark of moon
in frenzied fever each life I take

    each beautiful each innocent
each unaware that they would die
there will be more on the road ahead
one for every tear you made me cry

when the circus comes and the tents go up
the people cheer in each sleepy town
because the poor fools just don’t know
who’s really come is the killer clown

    Golden

    Golden

    •

    there is a quiet golden
in this evening as it settles
    unequaled in its beauty
by even that of precious metals

    it embraces vesper’s hour
    with a subtle gentle heat
    lays down upon the land
like the roll of amber wheat

    it dances in the air
strokes your hair aglow in smolders
folds its warmth upon your face
    fondles fiery ’round your shoulders

    it ignites a special magic
as though dreams are coming true
paints the world in a splendor
    almost beautiful as you

    a goddess of the sun
in this moment you catch fire
    my heart a helpless tinder
    now sparked by love’s desire

    caught by beauty’s flame
    I’m filled with passion’s yearning
    my soul is set ablaze
    please don’t leave me burning

    before I am consumed
quench me with your precious kiss
for if I am to be consumed
I pray it be in bliss
