Beautiful Assassin

This response is to “Caged Bird”, by Maya Angelou.

Osprey calling above the forest nearby
eyes focused sharp on the stream below
should he spy trout — he’ll tuck and dive
smooth cunning predator — he fishes solo
takes his victim quick — rocketing in low

talons like knives — he’s a lethal machine
wounds deep and deadly — delivers clean
with stunning precision, power, and pace
his attack instincts are impeccably keen
proud noble bird — pure speed and grace

his call is defiant — listen, you can hear it
that piercing scream — his unique battle cry
independent — you’ll not restrain his spirit
he is swift and agile gliding across the sky
beautiful assassin — stalking from on high

  1. I’m pleased to see the prompt inspired you to write another poem, Rob, and a stunning one! I love the use of punctuation to mimic the osprey’s movements – the tucking and diving – and the way it levels out in the lines:
‘with stunning precision, power, and pace
his attack instincts are impeccably keen
a proud noble bird, pure speed and grace’
    and
‘he is swift and agile gliding across the sky’.

    1. Thank you Kim. I enjoyed writing both. “As It Is” was essentially SOC with some final editing to organize the piece a bit. SOC is my favorite way to write. “Beautiful Assassin” was written, inspired by my perceived nature of an Osprey. In the 25 yeard we lived near the Oregon Coast, I have had the joy to have watched them many times over the Pacific Ocean, Cascade Mountain lakes, and mountain trout streams. Cool that it came through that way for you. 🙂
