Jazz Apparitions

Oh spirits
of toned wood and bamboo bent reed
of taut tuned steel and sizzlin’ skins
come to me now — jazz must be saved
jazz must be served — we’ll riff contrapuntal
play for me in healing virtuosity

I found a box and jammed it with jazz

whisper to me in purest resonance
unleash the chordal’d structure
espouse the harmonics of truth
tell all about the wirebirds
we must take violaville by storm
strummin’ wild in the tenth world
taunt me in a 3/4 minor chord flurry
of rich sizzling scalded jazz

I found a box and jammed it with jazz

here I come — I am an inferno
ensemble desire rages strong
as we rise skyward in musicality
ride’n the bliss of improv in scat
soaring in untethered sacred syncopation
well damn — we’re totally musicalirious

I found a box and jammed it with jazz

  1. Great to see this being inspired by Jazz, which is what I felt mostly with Bop…. maybe we can say it was a bop-bop

    1. The moment I read BOP, jazz was all my muse could think about — even tried a couple other directions Björn, but ultimately it was only jazz… 😉

    1. Thank you so much Laura! I am very pleased this resonated for you my friend. Thank you for this fascinating prompt, I’d never heard of the Bop form, but thoroughly enjoyed the challenge… 🙂

  2. Rob, you chose not only music but jazz music. You know the lingo too, which makes it so much better. Improv Jazz truly is heaven and infuses the soul with it.

  3. Requesting permission to jump inside your Jazz Box … with my jazzy flute! A Stupendous poem, Rob. OH and the art too.

  4. I would love a box jamming with jazz! I loved this line…ride’n the bliss of improv in scat. Wonderful Bop
