Original DDE™ surrealistic art: “Alice’s Produce Stand” by: rob kistner © 1/23/24
A veggie grower named Alice I’ve found
whose fresh veggies I consume with delight
her veggie stand is on the far side of town
gotta get more of Alice’s produce tonight
her Wonderland Risotto is simply to die for
her own homegrown mushrooms are the key
I’m off to Alice’s in hopes she has more
these other ‘shrooms I tried just don’t agree
while heading to Alice’s alone — not a care
through some tall trees I happen to glance
there’s a valley nature conceals down there
what do I see — a woodland nymph in a dance
I can not believe the wonder I see
a vision joined by singing butterfly elves
this enchanted vale is awhirl below me
mythical creatures enjoying themselves

dare I go down there and join in the fun
Blu and Poppy are there – I feel no fear
so down the mountainside quickly I run
burst through the trees – Alice! you’re here
Alice my dear, this is not your veggie stand
no — but follow me, hurry, let us not wait
my place is just ahead — please take my hand
you’re halucinating badly on that mushroom you ate
you feeling small, then big, is your head in a spin
I’ve something at my stand to make you feel right
then go home, make risotto — put my mushrooms in
close your eyes, take a nap, you’ll be fine tonight
I start drifting away, didn’t take but a while
as I do, I realize that I now understand
I dream Alice is saying with a huge Cheshire smile
“for ‘enlightening’ risotto try my Wonderland”

Beware of those mushrooms…you can end up many places. Great take on the prompt.
Thank you Di! 🙂 Yes my friend, they can certainly trip you up… 😉
Truly… I have understood that Alice in wonderland became important songs in the 70s with psychadelic drugs.
I had almost expected you to include “White Rabbit” by Jefferson Airplane as a song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WANNqr-vcx0
I had thought about inviting Grace Slick to the veggie stand, but I wanted a song less expected — buy that unforgettable bolero is now part of the indelible fabric of time — thank you for bringing it my friend… 🙂
Jefferson Airplane told us to ask Alice, and I’m glad you did in this prequel (or is it a sequel?). I think I had some of her Wonderland Risotto in the distant past!
It is a prequel, her origin story before she went down the rabbit hole… 🙂
I never would have thought Aluce had a veggie stall at the far side of town ????
Nice one Rob
Much?love
Girl’s gotta make a living Gillena… 😉
I love the rhyming and how you constructed the tale, especially this part : “I can not believe the wonder I see
a vision joined by singing butterfly elves
this enchanted vale is awhirl below me
mythical creatures enjoying themselves” – it felt relaxing to imagine.
So glad you enjoyed it Oloriel… It was a pleasure to write… 🙂
Ooooh this is exquisitely woven, Rob! 😀 I always felt like there was more to the story than met the eye.
Thank you Sanaa. Now you know how it all started… 😉
Alice, gotta love her .. peddling hallucinogens way before they became “a thing.” That rabbit hole? ~ inevitable. Had she been invited, Grace would have been first in line at the veggie stand.
Yes, you gotta love her Helen… 😉 I bet Grace was a regular customer… 😉
Wow! Those magical shrooms and Wonderland Risotto — Alice and her vegetable stand before she “fell down the hole”. Me thinks she was a little high on her veggies???? Fun one, Rob!
Lil — you didn’t really just think she was clumsy? Gotta watch those veggies my friend… 😉
Rob, this is great. I love how you blend the world of Alice’s veggie stand with a surreal journey into an enchanted vale!
~David
It’s all in Alice’s ‘shrooms David… 😉
Those wonderful shrooms will really make your head spin…
What a great Prequel, Rob. Nice work.
Thank you Dwight… 🙂
What an incredible imagination you have! I love the poem’s creativity and fluidity and the way you harnessed pop culture to modernize Alice.
Thanks Kim, glad you enjoyed this my friend… 🙂
Hallucinogenic mushrooms, eh? Explains a lot I’d say!! ????????As always, love your take on the prompt and your poetic gifts that rise to every occasion.
Alice was a progressive free thinker, who dabbled a bit… 😉 Thank you Dora… 🙂
Those mushrooms are probably responsible for much more creativity than we will ever know.
Oh, most certainly my friend, most certainly8… 🙂
I love this, Rob! Of course I am partial to Wonderland creatures.
This made me think of “White Rabbit”, and all sorts of produce.
Really glad you enjoyed this Sara. I too am a huge fan of Alice and her Wonderland crew… 🙂
