Autumn Reverie

”Autumn leaves don’t fall, they fly.
They take their time and wander on this their only chance to soar.”

The stir of autumn
enwraps my heart
as summer slowly wanes
riding the early fallen leaves
on the current of october waters
whirling and bobbing on crystal ripples
round and past the river rocks
over rip rap in the stream bed
carried vividly away
into the setting sun

days shorten
shadows lengthen
a quiet melancholy
settles upon the valley
as nature prepares itself
for the slumber of renewal

but not before the crackling
joyous dance of harvest
and a crisp crimson-gold
kiss goodnight

~ fading summer ends
rust leaves wither and mottle
autumn’s chill descends ~

  1. I feel more the cold, and the promise of darkness, but I agree the gold colors is something we should embrace better.

    1. Björn — I am certain a person’s perspective of Autumn depends greatly on the part of the world in which they live… 🙂 …we have beautiful Autumn days, they they are shorter, and rain factors into the matter, but we still enjoy many beautiful Autumn even Winter days. I did prefer these seasons more in Oregon than in Washington, especially the part of Oregon in which I lived for quarter of a century.
