Brandi

I greatly admire this fellow Washingtonian.

She is bold she is fierce
it’s her depth that appeals
ev’ry song that she sings
are the thoughts that she feels

while her heart she emotes
it’s her soul she reveals
she brings tears to my eyes
while my logic she steels

speaking truth she stirs hope
shattered dreams so to heal
and she gives of her self
her love rolls like a wheel

she is grit she is style
she is humble and real
she is Brandi Carlile
and she lives her ideals

  1. I adore Brandi Carlisle and your poem is a great tribute. I really like her track “The Eye.” Played that one a lot lately, but she is such a talented singer/songwriter. Great poem.

    1. I am totally enamored with her heart, with her soul, with her talent, with her smile, with her truth — she is one of those who don’t get aboard this spaceship earth very often… I am damned glad she is here. Now that my Joni has needed to go quiet, Brandi’s voice is risin’ risin’!
Watch all these videos through. When you do you will be hooked!

    1. Joni is, and will always be, my number one — but I am blown away by both Brandi’s talent as a songwriter/poet, and her amazingly angelic, multi-octave voice… WOW!
She lives with her wife and two children in Ravensdale WA, reasonably near both of us — 35 miles from me.

  2. You’re a master of the the anapestic tetrameter, Rob. This flowed smoothly and with such emotion, it’s hard to resist the tug on your heart. Beautiful.

    1. Thank you M Jay. Just get the da-da-DUM-da-da-DUM rhythm going in your head — then start inserting words that fit the meter, for the ongoing da-da-DUM’s… even if it’s nonsense at first. Repeat and repeat until something begins revealing itself to you. un-der-stand is a da-da-DUM by itself — so make a list of such words until something sparks. You will know when it’s right.

  3. I’ve never really listened to Brandi before, although I did see her at Joni’s birthday party, and I didn’t know her wife was British, but I’m so glad you shared her version of ‘A Case of You’. I would have given her the elbow if she’d told me she didn’t like Joni! I enjoyed your Love your tribute!

  4. Thanks for bringing her back into the light for me with this lovely tribute. I’ll be listening to more of her again. Pure talent and heart. The best music comes from a deep place….like poetry, in my opinion.

    1. You are welcome Mish. Good music has effective poetry as a key element. Brandi, along with her profound abilities as a brilliant songwriter and amazing signer — she is a superb poet. Her impactful lyrics are honest, deep, and full of beautiful surprises!

  5. Oh this verse is so good
that I read through it twice
and I smiled when I did
    ‘cuz it’s cooler than ice.

So I take off my hat
and I smile and I bow
    I shall read it again
I shall do so right now

  6. Brandi singing ‘The Joke’ brings me to my knees. She is truly an amazing talent and even though she resides in WA, it’s close enough to OR for me to sort of claim her. Nice write, Rob.

      1. Listening to Brandi’s music will either put tears in your eyes, or a wiggle’n scoot in your boots. Love her stuff, and I like some, but very few other country music artists. Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, Big Little Town, Dan and Shay are a few others whose music I like — but for this jazz, 60’s & 70’s rock, and R&B fan, the total number is small.

    1. Brandi and her wife Catherine, and their two children, live in a huge log cabin “estate” 35 miles from me. Her sidemen, twins Phil and Tim Hanseroth, with their wives and children, all live on adjacent properties. Phil’s wife Tiffany is Brandi’s sister.

  7. You really got the rhythm to perfection… also amazing how well it could fit to the rhythm of Eminem (which might not be your style of music) but you have that drive that makes it great.
