Gears of Time

The future — the past
tomorrow — yesterday
gears of time turn so fast
moments slip away

we fret what we missed
or obsess our destiny
yet today is all there is
forget the was — the will be

days yet to unfold
ones that slipped away
are not days in our control
we only have today

why stare at the clock
panicked by what may come
slow down — learn to walk
stop running to and from

forget what’s come and gone
wondering why or when or how
we get lost looking beyond
better to truly be here – NOW

*
time

ever accelerating
in spiral linearity

time

escaping into the future
tethered to the past
ever present in the now

time

* *

  1. We can’t change the past or predict the future. So what does that mean about today? Love how you offer two perspectives on this, Rob. (Now my head hurts!)

    1. We can’t waste “today”, it is our only chance to be mindful and make a positive difference in the world. We must live each day eyes open, engaged, and with positive intent.

  2. It is better to truly be in the now. The past is unchangeable and the future unknowable. So stop paying attention to the clock and live in the present. I loved each stanza and line.

    1. Thank you Lori. It is not easy to do, but if you embrace the reality of it, and remain mindful of its importance — you can achieve the mindset… most of the time.

    1. They are Sunra, and a handful of extraordinary people living mindfully and powerfully in the now can save this wonderful planet and all its inhabitants — ALL ITS INHABITANTS!

    1. So glad this resonated for you David. You are a good man who I am convinced firmly believes in the reality of now, the power of living in the now because it is the only place in “time” we can exert positive influence to strive every “”now”” to make this world a better place! The one that is coming will need all our positive energies for many years to come. But mindful people living extraordinarily in the now can make it work — and what we need is work and poetry and song to build s new world!
