Identity
•
I came upon a stranger
she asked me
“who are you?â€
I pondered
then replied
I am son
born
to a mother unknown
a father
unseen
I am father
three times blessed
with life’s miracle
I am joy
having beheld
each child’s coming
I am betrothed
touched by
a lover’s heart
I am sorrow
having lost
my eldest son
I am wonder
marveling
at the gift of life
the beauty
of this natural realm
I am song
fortuned with
a lyric voice
I am art
bestowed with
a balanced eye
I am athlete
fleet of foot
strong of frame
I am word
burdened with
a poet’s plight
I am gratitude
to have known
this life at all
I am a simple man
who stands this day
before you
in the end
I am you
and
you are me
we are one another
most uncertain
quite who we are

Excellent. All the aspects of identity in one.
Wonderfully told…
dog and (wo)man
This was just wonderful Rob. I love the rhythm of the poem and all the different stages and accomplishments you refer to and write about, so eloquently.
So glad I stopped by.
Hi Rob, I was reading your post as my husband walked in the room. I read it aloud and he said “damn, he’s good.” I must agree Rob!
Fantastic. I hate coming here because it makes my poetry seem like it was written by Forrest Gump.
Beautiful. You have brought in most of every aspect into this….loved this.
Words burdened by the poet’s plight…was great 🙂
Really liked this one!
This was beautiful
rob, this was indeed a fantastic poem…so many identities, so many names, yet answering to one?
I am awestruck – by your precise use of language. Not a word out of place. You are good. You are REALLY good.
Very beautifully worded Rob . Love the rhythm created in the poem. Love the gamut of emotions transited .. Joy ..sorrow ..Gratitude …
Very well written indeed.
It was a rather nosy question but you came up with great answers.
the idea of all humanity being one is something thats figured a lot in my life lately. this is perfect. an individual part of a whole.
Very beautiful; and oh so meaningful – I don’t even know you, but I do believe this could be you. But many aspects of it could be me and all of us. As human beings, we experience so many commonalities- and yet we tend to stress on the differences; In reality, we are one! Thank you so much for sharing – it made my day today. Peace, Light and Love to you and yours. . .
