Jazz

This is a new piece I created as an abstract representation of what jazz might look like if it could be seen with the eye. The shifting colors depict the moods that evolve and change during the improvisational playing, the vibrating lines are the riffs, and the geometric points are the percussive licks. Part of my 3D Geometric series, “Jazz” is a giclée on Arches textured stock, and measures 48″W x 24″H.

  3. I looked at the image and I thought “jazzy” even before I started reading the description. Beautiful colors and patterns. I love your amazing art!

  4. Thank you Sallyl!

I find it enjoyable trying to capture a feeling or an essence with abstract art. It is very much like creating a poem, and certainly like playing jazz — it’s improvisational. I keep the flow and build of the work in motion until it feels right.

  5. I will now think of this whenever I listen to one of my Gypsy Jazz CDs, which is what I have in my player as I type this. A compilation my niece sent me for my birthday. I’ve heard Django Rheinhardt before and Stephane Grapelli, of course, but now I have a whole new flock of musicians to track down. I love it when that happens. I started out in my teens liking Bix Biederbecke and Charlie Parker and except for the real techno-electronica jazz, it’s all good as far as I’m concerned. I often “see” images when I listen to music, which I do as often as possible. If I didn’t also enjoy interacting with other people, I’d probably listen to music almost constantly. You are such a talented person, Rob. I know I’ve probably missed it on your blog, but where do you sell your art?

  6. Thank you Lill for the kind words.

I love jazz. My personal favorite jazz album of all time is “Kind of Blue” by Miles Davis. It is a masterwork. No matter how many times I hear that album, and now CD (I played my vinyl to its demise) — it still touches new parts of my soul, opens my imagination.

It is an incredible album to listen to while creating — or to just connect with the eternal. Played full, on my surround system, 2:00 AM, candles lit — wow!

My son Justin and I used to have a website through which we offered our artworks, but that has shut down. Jus is the Interactive Director for a “hot” web developer with clients such as Nike and Hewlett Packard. His career is very demanding. After my heart attack I became reclusive to heal.

I am, with this Image & Verse blog, just now getting reacquainted with my creativity. A new website to sell art could be in the future — who knows?

  7. Hi Rob,

Brian wrote a poem called “What does Great Jazz sound like?, this reminds me of that. Jazz is so complex that no matter how deep into the picture you go, there’s still more there.

    Sincerely,

    Your cat herder. 🙂

  8. That is precisely its beauty and appeal Rose. Because it is not rigid, because its fluid and marvelously irregular — every listen reveals something different.

Jazz connects at an ethereal level, somewhere above just intellect — where mind meets spirit/soul. Fantastic!

I’d love to read Brian’s poem.

  9. Tara / GZ –

Thanks for your kind words. I appreciate them.

I enjoy doing abstract art, trying to define a feeling or concept visually — without using literal representation. It’s sort of like playing jazz.

You’re welcome GZ, I enjoyed your site.
