the stir of autumn
enwraps my heart
as summer slowly wanes
riding the early fallen leaves
on the current of october waters
whirling and bobbing on crystal ripples
round and past the river rocks
over rip rap in the stream bed
carried vividly away
into the setting sun
days shorten
shadows lengthen
a quiet melancholy
settles upon the valley
as nature prepares itself
for the slumber of renewal
but not before the crackling
joyous dance of harvest
and a crisp crimson-gold
kiss goodnight

“a quiet melancholy begins” true but with a deal of gentleness.
Autumn slips on like a beautiful sweater Derrick…

Lovely, Rob; I especially like the concluding lines, the reverse of awakening the Sleeping Beauty.
There’s a nice flow to this, with your choices of words such as stir, advancing, current, whirling, fallen, carried, etc. all feeding into the images of autumn.
As always, your comments are warm and gracious — thank you Maureen…

‘a quiet melancholy’ … I enjoyed those words – had never thought of Fall that way …
Helen, a quiet melancholy from the perspective of a leaving behind, an ending, a closing of a chapter – as we enter the sleep of winter… but in anticipation of the pending renewal of spring…
