a broken heart that belongs to me
it once was vital whole and strong
‘till one day beauty came along
she reached in and stole my heart
but fickle beauty did depart
she’d found a better heart she said
and left mine hanging by a thread
my heart grew heavy with her farewell
my heart-thread snapped and down it fell
my fragile heart crashed to the ground
these pieces shattered all around
I’m trying to make it whole again
but not sure how, and can’t say when
I’m working on it piece by piece
hoping soon this pain will cease
Hi! I’m Edgrrr, rob’s shih tzu.
Sad yet beautiful words. Well written.
Thank you Arcadia! I tried to tell you I enjoyed your quatrain, but your website wouldn’t post my comment…
I hear you, Rob.
“I’m trying to make it whole again
but not sure how, and can’t say when”
Joni’s exquisite music and singing goes so well with your poem.
Sometimes all the pieces don’t seem to go back together. I LOOOOOOOVVVE MY JONI!!! 🙂
I appreciate your poetry, Rob. And your responses. Happy Summer Solstice!
Thank you Lisa, happy Solstice to you too.
Lovely. Are you a song writer too? I think this would go well with music
Thank you Bryan! Been writing since I was 16 in 1963. For the first two decades it included lyrics for my R&B, then my rock bands. When I do occasionally write rhyme nowadays, I tend to fall into a syncopated rhythm. Hard to break that mold.
I love the rhythm of this piece. Excellent work!
Thank you Clara! 🙂
I share your passion for Joni … hope your heart heals soon!
Well written 🙂
Thank you Kate. Joni has been my secret soul crush ever since she released her album “Clouds” in 1969, and I heard her sing “Chelsea Morning”. She sounded like an angel. Then I saw her on the Mama Cass (of the Mamas & Papas) ABC Television Network show in 1969, singing “I Shall Be Released” with Cass and Mary Travers of Peter Paul & Mary. Joni was so beautiful, increfunle eyes and a smild like sunrise. She blew me away and still does today. I saw her live in February 1976, right around my birthday, at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. That was my miracle day, because my band played a late night party for the local event group and the student concert workers. Joni walked in at the end or our set with drummer John Guerin of the L A Express. They were her backing band. I think she was dating John at the time. They stayed for our last couple songs because their bus and gear was being loaded for a concert in Cleveland the next night. I got to meet and talk with Joni for maybe 5-10 minutes after we finished our songs. She then headed for her bus.I was high emotionally for probably a week. NEVER WILL FORGET IT! Saw her one more time in August 1979 at the Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls Ohio. She remembered me and my band from her Miami U after concert party in Oxford OH. Chatted very briefly before she went on stage. Her back up band on that tour was Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker, Jaco Pastorious, Lyle Mays, and Don Alias. Incredible night of music! Never saw her again in person, but my soul crush is alive and well. She is an incredible, poet, musician, singer, music writer, and fabulous painter. She is a gift!

Although the subject is sad, it has a jaunty rhythm. There’s still hope!
The piece is an embellishment of a relationship from years ago Jane, long over. First wife. Ended up marrying the women, and had a beautiful daughter Jennifer. Divorced when Jeni was 2 years old. Still friends with ex in a détente kinda way. Jeni has always been a full part of my life. Coached her in soccer for 11 years. I pick her up at SeaTac tomorrow. She is visiting for tye weekend.
Nice description of the departure of a loved one. I like the description of the fragile heart hanging by a thread.
Thank you Frank, it’s not a hood feeling to be that vulnerable.
Rob,this has a wonderful rhythm to it. I love it!
Thank you Linda! It’s the syncopation I utilized when I wrote rock lyrics.
An eloquent confession of a broken heart, well told!
Thank you very much Frank!
“trying to make it whole again” – so chancy, isn’t it?
Beautiful rhythm to this, Rob.
Yes it is! Thank you Sara… 🙂
Well done, Rob, and so vivid.
Thank you Crystal! 🙂
Heartbreak does make goodness hard to find.
Indeed Kerfe, it shrouds one in a pall.
A peek into a life. Nicely done Rob. I’m just now reading up on this form.
Pat
Thank you Pat!
