Gratitude

M other gaia
you embrace us

you carry us safely
as we hurtle
thousands of miles
every hour
of every day
through infinite space

and the wonderful friends
and loved ones
who are with us
on this truly amazing journey

they provide us
with their precious love
to keep us strong and good

you provide for us
our every need

sustain our bodies
with your abundance
of remarkable food varieties
and breathtaking natural beauty

you nurture our spirits
with that beauty
and those endless wonders

your need is simple

that we live in balance
with your rhythms
with our fellow travelers
on this amazing journey

that we know well — gratitude
as humble stewards
of your countless gifts

but we’ve grown arrogant

foolishly we believe
we have dominion over you
over all in your realm

in pursuit of intellect
we lost our sense
our equilibrium

we’ve lost our way

even as we watch you suffer
we cling to our ego
to our destructive delusion
of supremacy

please forgive us
do not forsake us
we can learn

precious mother gaia
guide us
grant us time
to again find our way

our humility
our integrity
our center

that we again embrace gratitude
and in so doing — find our grace
find the balance

  1. Yes! This is such a thrilling response to the guards, full of wisdom and spiritual strength. Here is a real message for the reading to take away with him/her.

      1. I have tried to leave a comment on your blog about your wonderful interpretstion of the cards, but your comments do not permit me to verify with my name and URL address, so it rejects my comments – frustrating! You need to change your “who can comment” settings to allow anyone to comment – or just know that I, and likely others, who do not have Blogger or Google accounts-can’t leave comments.

    1. Thank you Kerry, after pondering the cards for a while, a bright spark of inspiration happened that took me there to thr initial draft of the piece very quickly. Some brief editing, and I had it. It was a very exciting experience! Loved the entire prompt idea. I adore good strong unusual visual prompts. That is why I loved, and thrived writing tto the superb visuals Tess Kincaid posted on her “Magpie Tales” site back in the day. That is why the prompts I offered over the years on my “Writer’s Island” site were visual – to let the many poets and writers that frequented my site to stretch out and be fully creative. “Writer’s Island” was purely inspirational, not instructional. My poets that formed community around WI were able quality writers. I loved this prompt that you and Ella put together! Bravo! You should do a visual prompt of this “level” every week! Again, bravo!

  2. I love how you balanced beauty and the world’s ego by sharing the imbalances and asking for forgiveness. The approach you used felt like a bird soaring towards the sun and yet showing us the storm. There is so, much grace in your poem~ I enjoyed reading your interpretation~
    Thank you!

    1. Thank you Ella! It was a joy to be inspired by this beutiful prompt! As I commented here to Kerry, I adore good strong unusual visual prompts. I thrive writing to superb visuals. The two prompt sites that I embraced most back in their day was Tess Kincaid’s “Magpie Tales” site. Brilliant visual prompts! She inspired to follow her example with my “Writer’s Island” site – only strong captivating visual prompts – to let the many poets and writers that frequented both sites over the years, stretch out and be fully creative. Thse purely inspirational, not instructional. They attracted able, quality writers. Ella, I loved this prompt that you and Kerry put together! Bravo! IGWRT should do a visual prompt of this quality “level” every week! Again, bravo to the two of you!

  3. Well said, Rob. “Seeking to be wise, they made themselves fools” describes the human course pretty well, and humility must now replace arrogance. What better way to start than with this prayer?

    1. Thank you Shay. Let’s hope we can rein our arrogance and get in balance before this world goes compltely off the rails – if it’s not there already.

  4. Let’s hope her patience is immense. We humans tend to like to tip the scales dangerously. I pray for balance in all things –
“sustain our bodies with your abundance”… I like that a lot and “in pursuit of intellect we lost our sense our equilibrium”… That is spot on!

  5. Nice interpretation, Rob. Whoever’s order we are under, it’s Jesus Christ for me, I fear we have strayed and try to be independent, on our own, no longer subservient to the order we’ve chosen, if we have that choice.
    ..

    1. Thank you Jim. I respect your right to believe as you will religiously, but whatever else, the human race has got to get in balance with the rest of the nstursl world, or we won’t be here much longer.

    1. I am a dinosauer Brendan, born as WWll ended. A dreamer who believed all my life that the world could be a better and better place as time continued forward. I believed we as a species could continue advancing, elevating ourselves. I believed people must certainly be essentially good. I believed people could live in peace, that people wanted to live in peace. I believed love could rule this planet. I am a fool. I no longer believe – but I can’t let go of my hope.

  6. Hi Rob, sorry but we are setting a limit for one poem to link at What’s Going On? to be fair to all and to give everyone a chance to link and comment on one another’s work as part of our community. Hope to. see you next week.

    1. 🙂 OK, got it Mary. I have become accustomed to d’Verse, where a second link of a piece in response to a prompt is OK. OLN there is limited to one prompt. Obviously I hadn’t looked close enough at the WGO rules… sorry… 🙂

  7. Rob, I just found this poem now, which is beautiful, and expresses the way I feel, too, so well. We humans learn so slowly…….too slowly……….a really beautiful poem with a great message. Gratitude is what I hold onto, to comfort myself in the midst of all the human folly.
