The Truth

The Truth

~

I’m awake here late this Christmas Eve, wrestling hard with what I believe is bunk about this Santa Claus thing, and here’s the evidence that I bring.

It’s said his reindeer all can fly, but did you ever see them in the sky? So he makes all the gifts just with elfs. Then what’s the stuff in stores on shelfs? And he lands his sleigh atop our roofs! Gotta’ ask you now — heard any hoofs? They insist, he’s down the chimney into the fireplace! He’s so rotund he wouldn’t fit that space. And, oh yeah, all year long he knows how I act? Sorry, but I overwhelmingly dispute this fact.

Regarding the truth of Santa Claus, all of this proof is full of flaws. Reading what I have just written, I now believe I know what’s true. Santa Claus lives in me and you.

My wife and I as “singing” Santa and Mrs Clause. Before my failed health, we would visit several families each year at Christmas as a special surprise for the children. I miss it so! (real beard 🙂 )

  1. We had Santa make a house call and he was so convincing I thought my son would never give up! I always told my children “as long as you believe in magic, there is a Santa Claus”.

    1. I loved being Santa Bev. The wonder and love in a small child’s eyes while I was visiting is impossible to describe — and the feeling in my heart was incredible!

  2. “They insist, he’s down the chimney into the fireplace! He’s so rotund he wouldn’t fit that space. And, oh yeah, all year long he knows how I act? Sorry, but I overwhelmingly dispute this fact.”

As a child, I would imagine Santa, if he existed, would fall down into a chimney that was lit. Safe to say, I never believed in him. 😀 Morbid? Perhaps. I say creative.

I love the whole essence of this poem. The spirit of Christmas truly stems from within, how we treat others, customs, traditions, etc. This is beautifully written.

That picture is also so adorable! That must have been fun to do.

  3. This is so sweet, Rob! I remember when my daughter was little, and I took her to see Santa in his grotto – she sobbed her heart out. Yesterday, she told me that Lucas had received a letter from Santa, one she had written!

  4. ????spot on, Rob! I am getting asked some very challenging questions about The Big Man from my 8-year-old this year, but he and I both want to keep the magic alive as long as possible – who says it ever needs to end?

    1. Believing in Santa is believing in thd beauty of giving, and the power of wonder. I never stopped believing, that is why I was visiting singing Santa for many wonderful magical years. It is so uplifting to experience the purity and joy in a child’s heart.

  5. OH MY! I smiled all the way through your post here and LOVED what you did with the line. And THEN I saw the photo and read its caption. What a wonderful tradition you and hour wife had. You must have made many families happy 🙂 And oh yes, Santa is in everyone’s hearts if they just let him ho ho ho in there 🙂

    1. Glad you enjoyed this Lillian. My wife and I really miss our many visits as Santa and Mrs. They made this old curmudgeon’s heart melt when I’d look into the eyes of a child who still “believed” — and there was true innocence, wonder, joy, and love — I really miss it!

  6. Who is this Santa Claus, of whom thou speaketh>

PS: FYI: The flying reindeer are not nearly as tender (not do they barbecue as evenly) as their earth-bound brethren.

    Nicely rhymed prose, RK. Salute!
